The footages are authentic of an un-altered aired episode except where modern graphics are placed. It makes you wonder what didn’t they mess with all those years ago And how it has affected the generations, the cuckoo clock makes several pointers to the number 6 in a succession. From that WNBT Ten Year Ago special, Howdy defeats Mr. X to become President of the Kids. Ben Grauer talks over the 1948 kinescope, (which features Howdy, Buffalo Bob Smith and Bob Keeshan as Clarabell) Howdy’s Presidential campaign received such a strong audience response (the show got 58000 requests for campaign buttons) that it convinced Polaroid to become the program’s first sponsor. By the end of 1948, Howdy was the 6th most watched TV show in New York, and they were marketing Howdy Doody dolls. Pretty good for a show that aired at 5:30 PM. Howdy Doody was before my time of course, and it is one of those shows whose appeal escapes me. I never heard my brother talk about it either- he was more interested in local children’s shows. Here’s a never-before-seen outtake from Barry Mitchell’s afternoon with Howdy Doody Show creator and host, Buffalo Bob Smith. Even in retirement, Smith was a consummate showman, and played to the camera with mesmerizing effect. Recorded for ABC News in Flat Rock, NC in 1997.

This was Boffalo Bob Smith’s last TV appearance. It aired live on Friday, July 3rd, 1998 on the QVC shopping channel. Buffalo Bob passed away at the end of the month. I believe this was his last TV appearance. Sorry I’m missing the first couple of minutes.

The first big time TV show for kids…Howdy Doody….Clara Belle..the Peanut Gallery and Buffalo Bob…..HUGE among children from 1947 to 1960…..Major cultural force for chidlren raised in those days…..He was full life…..I talked to him in the early 90′s he died in 1998 he was 80 and died from cancer..survived a heart attack in 1954….TV hall of Famer and pioneer…great guy!
